Brief History |

Did you know that the Western Springs Park District was formed in 1924? Between 1931 and 1963, various parcels of land were purchased or deeded which now make up Spring Rock Park. Spring Rock Park received its name in June of 1934. This name recognized the existence of an artesian spring, which in the 1800’s created a 25 foot diameter pool on the tract. Spring Rock Park became Western Springs’ first recreational park and the only downtown park in a village along the Burlington Railroad with the exception of Riverside’s riverbank. Old articles suggest that much thought went into the planning and development of the park to bring about its great beauty and usefulness. Many Park Boards through the years have given much attention to maintaining Spring Rock’s beauty and usefulness, as well as expanding park property throughout the Village. Upgrades in Spring Rock Park were made possible by the acquisition of an OSLAD (Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development) grant and substantial donations by AYSO Region 300, the Village of Western Springs, Western Springs Football League and Western Springs Little League. One needs only to drive by on any given night from Spring to Fall and see that the park is being used in all capacities. Spring Rock Park is not only for organized sports, but has become a hub for leisure strolls, family picnics and occasional chess games. |
